Bulldogs defend title at Bear Creek Invitational

Ceres High School's varsity wrestling program successfully defended its dual-meet title at the Bear Creek Invitational on Friday in Stockton.

The Bulldogs collected victories against Enochs (45-28), Lindhurst (46-31), Bear Creek (56-21), Mira Loma (63-18) and Santa Cruz (66-18).

"I knew we'd make the finals," head coach Jon Nowicki said. "But I didn't know we'd be able to repeat. There were some better teams there this year."

Ceres High used its superior talent and depth to compile a 5-0 record.

Gabe Balderas (5-0), Keegan Overbey (5-0), Christian Moore (5-0), Curtis Hulstine (4-0), Wesley Schwieger (4-1), Tony Spinella (4-1), Erik Eisenbeis (4-1), Andrew Cefre (2-0), Marc Piceno (1-0), Christian Rodriguez (3-1), Rajdeep Singh (3-2), Nick Moran (3-2), Jordan Apodoca (3-2), Vincent DeAnda (2-3), Lucas Silva (1-4) and Ruben Sanchez (0-3) all contributed.

"We were the most well-conditioned team there," assistant coach Steve Festa said. "Our hard practices are definitely paying off."

The Bulldogs had six medalists during the individual portion of the Bear Creek Invitational on Saturday.

Hulstine and Moore compiled perfect 3-0 records on their way to placing first at 125 and 171 pounds, respectively.

Spinella (2-1) took second in the 160-pound division.

Balderas (1-1, 103 pounds), Overbey (3-1, 135) and Rodriguez (3-1, 152) claimed third-place medals.

Apodoca (3-2, 145), Moran (3-2, 140), Singh (3-2, 130), Cefre (140, 2-2), Silva (0-2, 215), Sanchez (0-2, 215), Piceno (0-2, 119), Schwieger (0-2, 112) and Chad Atchison (171, 2-2) competed as well.

"Everybody wrestled with a lot of heart and technique," Festa said.
