Bulldogs near-perfect in preseason

Ceres High School's varsity softball team rolled to an 8-1 record during the preseason.

The Bulldogs picked up their final three victories last week against Turlock, Pitman and Golden Valley.

"We got a lot of confidence going into league," head coach Donnie Donaldson said. "It's going to be hard to stop us."

Ceres High defeated visiting Turlock 7-2 on Friday.

Senior pitcher Vaneza Hoover notched her sixth win of the season. She fanned 12 batters and surrendered just four hits.

The Bulldogs had 11 hits on offense.

Mika Johnson batted 3-for-4 from the plate, scored two runs and stole three bases.

Amanda Lampley collected two doubles and two RBIs.

Ceres High outscored Turlock 6-0 during the final five innings.

Kaycee Creek played a major role in the Bulldogs' 6-0 triumph over Pitman on Thursday in Turlock.

The freshman pitcher tallied 15 strikeouts and yielded one hit over seven innings. She relied on her rise ball and slow changeup.

"She's really good at location," Donaldson said.

Ceres finished with 12 hits on offense.

Shaye Farriester homered, drove in two runs and scored once.

Mika went 4-for-5 and scored two runs.

Ryan Norton was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

The Bulldogs scored one run in the first inning, two in the second and three in the sixth.

Hoover had 13 strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs as host Ceres High cruised to a 7-0 win against Golden Valley on Wednesday.

Creek, Farriester, Lampley had two hits apiece.

Mika Johnson contributed with a single, a run and two stolen bases.

Ceres High will begin the Valley Oak League portion of its 2009 schedule this week. The Bulldogs host Manteca today and travel to Sierra on Friday. Both games begin at 4 p.m.
