Ceres High School's varsity baseball team improved to 5-2 in non-conference play this past week.

The Bulldogs notched their fifth win of the season on Friday, beating Atwater 12-6 in a makeup game at Art McRae Field.

"I'm very pleased with how the kids are playing right now," head coach Bret Durossette said.

Tyler Cummings, Ceres High's starting pitcher, allowed just one earned run, scattered seven hits and fanned three in six innings against the Falcons. He also batted 2-for-3 from the plate with one homer, one double, two RBIs and two runs.

"Our expectations for him (Cummings) are high," Durossette said.

The Bulldogs posted a team-batting average of .438 (14 of 32) against the Falcons.

A.J. Fontana homered, doubled, drove in four runs and scored once.

Jimbo Pernetti doubled, knocked in one run and scored twice.

Dustin Baisdon collected two singles and two runs.

Brent Ward chipped in with two singles, one RBI and one run.

Ceres High outscored Atwater 12-1 in the opening three innings.

The Bulldogs rallied for a 6-4 win over visiting Downey on Wednesday.

Ceres High tallied five runs on its way to battling back from a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning.

"These kids don't quit," Durossette said. "That's what I've noticed this year."

Bulldog pitcher Tyler Brenning gave up two runs and three hits with seven strikeouts over five innings.

Ward batted 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.

Basidon tallied a single, an RBI and a run.

Matt Cardelli drove in a run and scored once.

Cummings had a double and an RBI.

Ceres High lost 9-6 at Lincoln of Stockton on Monday, March 7.

"They're a Division-I powerhouse," Durossette said.

Nick Welsh batted 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and a run.

Cardelli (triple, RBI, run) and Brenning (double and two RBIs) also contributed.

The Bulldogs trailed 6-1 at the end of the first inning.

Ceres High will make its debut in the Western Athletic Conference this week.

The Bulldogs will play host to the Los Banos Tigers on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

"Hopefully, we stay where we're at offensively," Durossette said.
