The Ceres High girls tennis team just missed securing an upset victory against undefeated Sonora last week.
The visiting Bulldogs fell 3-2 to the Wildcats in Valley Oak League play on Thursday.
"We gave everything we had," coach Bryan Harden said. "We just came up a little bit short."
Ceres High (9-3) must beat East Union (8-4) and Central Valley (6-5) this week to earn the VOL's second and final playoff berth.
The Lancers won the first meeting via tiebreaker by a total of three games (73-70).
"It was a really close match," Harden said.
The Bulldogs posted a 13-2 victory over the Hawks on Oct. 2.
Ceres High won two of three singles and dropped both doubles matches against Sonora.
McKenzy Harden defeated Carley Steichen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Harden, who improved to 26-0 in league play, overcame a 3-2 deficit in the first set.
"As soon as she started mixing it up a little bit, the rout was on," coach Harden said.
Logan Harden defeated Sammy Garman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
"She played really well," Harden said. "She was focused."
Angie Prak lost 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to Miss Johnson at No. 3 singles.
"I'm still proud of her effort," Harden said. "She played hard. She battled."
Tiffany Ornells and Sydney Featherstone lost 6-2, 6-3 to Rachel Shelton and Koko Ankrom at No. 1 doubles.
"They were not ready to play for whatever reason," Harden said. "Maybe the pressure was a little too much."
Natalie Flores and Christina Villavong lost 6-1, 6-2 to Marissa Lupo and Jordan Kopf at No. 2 doubles.

The Bulldogs topped the Mustangs at Ceres High School on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
"That was a big win," coach Harden said.

Ornells and Featherstone beat Raleigh O'Brien and Tiana Teague 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Flores and Villavong lost 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to Elise Derby and Tierney Siedel at No. 2 doubles.
