The Ceres High girls tennis team just missed securing an upset victory against undefeated Sonora last week.

The visiting Bulldogs fell 3-2 to the Wildcats in Valley Oak League play on Thursday.

"We gave everything we had," coach Bryan Harden said. "We just came up a little bit short."

Ceres High (9-3) must beat East Union (8-4) and Central Valley (6-5) this week to earn the VOL's second and final playoff berth.

The Lancers won the first meeting via tiebreaker by a total of three games (73-70).

"It was a really close match," Harden said.

The Bulldogs posted a 13-2 victory over the Hawks on Oct. 2.

Ceres High won two of three singles and dropped both doubles matches against Sonora.

McKenzy Harden defeated Carley Steichen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Harden, who improved to 26-0 in league play, overcame a 3-2 deficit in the first set.

"As soon as she started mixing it up a little bit, the rout was on," coach Harden said.

Logan Harden defeated Sammy Garman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

"She played really well," Harden said. "She was focused."

Angie Prak lost 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to Miss Johnson at No. 3 singles.

"I'm still proud of her effort," Harden said. "She played hard. She battled."

Tiffany Ornells and Sydney Featherstone lost 6-2, 6-3 to Rachel Shelton and Koko Ankrom at No. 1 doubles.

"They were not ready to play for whatever reason," Harden said. "Maybe the pressure was a little too much."

Natalie Flores and Christina Villavong lost 6-1, 6-2 to Marissa Lupo and Jordan Kopf at No. 2 doubles.
