Competing with a revamped lineup, the Ceres High varsity boys water polo team opened its 2007 campaign in spectacular fashion last week.

"We're definitely playing at a high caliber at the moment," coach Brian Kline said. "It's surprising and exciting because we lost so much to graduation and two people didn't come out that played last year."

Ceres collected road victories over Beyer and Grace Davis in Valley Oak League play.

Led by hole-setter Kevin Fliflet, the Bulldogs edged the Patriots 11-8 on Thursday in Modesto.

"He's definitely a force right now," Kline said.

Fliflet tallied a career-high seven goals.

Teammates Shane Nunes, George Polovin and Chris Rossi combined for four goals. Nunes had two. Polovin and Rossi both contributed one.

Ceres outscored Beyer 7-3 in the first half.

Bulldogs 23, Spartans 17

Ceres and Grace Davis combined for 40 goals in their MMC opener on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Modesto.

Ryan Calou, Chris Rossi and Aaron Torres-Valadez scored six, five and three goals, respectively, for the Bulldogs.

Ceres led 14-11 at intermission.

The Bulldogs posted a 3-2 record in the Central California Tournament at Johansen High School.

"We had a very successful weekend," Kline said. "We're improving every game. That's the main key."

Fliflet and Calou led the Bulldogs in scoring.

Ceres defeated Antioch 16-2 and Grace Davis 14-8 on Friday.

The Bulldogs won one of three matches on Saturday, beating Los Banos 9-8 and falling 13-2 to Fresno High and 16-4 to Atwater.

"The two teams we lost to play a more physical water polo," Kline said.
