CHS wrestlers 2-2 in league

A tough task awaited Ceres High's varsity wrestling team on the road last Wednesday.

As expected, the Bulldogs took care of business against Manteca but lost to powerful Oakdale in a Valley Oak League tri-meet at Winter Gymnasium.

Ceres High moved to 2-2 in the Valley Oak League standings.

"We're doing okay for how young our team is," Bulldogs coach Jon Nowicki said. "Hopefully, we can finish the year strong. We're in the same position as we were last season."

Ceres High won 10 of 14 bouts during its 58-24 triumph over host Manteca.

"We definitely took it to them," Nowicki said.

Rigo Guerra, Dustin Espinoza, Tony Spinella and Steven Chavez collected first-round pins at 130, 135, 152 and 189 pounds, respectively.

Brian Naylor (103), Keegan Overbey (125) and Erik Eisenbeis (145) all won via pin in the second round of their respective matches.

Shawn Amirfar (140) won by pin in the third round.

Tony Chavez won by major decision (10-2) over Estevan Garcia at 160 pounds.

Curtis Hulstine won by decision (9-6) over Marcus Gonzales at 112 pounds.

The Bulldogs suffered losses at 119 (forfeit), 171 (injury default), 215 (forfeit) and 285 (pin) pounds.

Ceres High dropped eight of 14 matches in a 43-27 defeat to Oakdale.

"We made a lot of mistakes that shouldn't have happened," Nowicki said. "I thought we'd do a little better."

The two teams wrestled a total of nine matches as the Mustangs surrendered 18 points through three forfeits to the Bulldogs' Steven Chavez (189), Jess Gilmore (215) and Diego Garcia (285).

Guerra, Eisenbeis and Tony Chavez were also victorious.

Rigo edged Trevor Noon 5-4 at 130 pounds. Guerra secured the win with a takedown in the waning seconds.

Erik defeated Travis Phillips 10-5 in overtime at 145 pounds. Eisenbeis broke a 5-all tie with a takedown and near fall.

Tony topped A.C. Brown 5-3 in double overtime at 160 pounds. The score was tied at 3-all at the end of the third period and first overtime. Chavez locked up the victory with a reversal.

Espinoza lost by decision (14-10) to Garrett Avant at 135 pounds. Dustin led 10-9 at the end of the second period.

Naylor lost by major decision (18-9) to Kaleb Lee at 103 pounds.

Hulstine lost by pin in the second round to Shane Tate at 112 pounds.

Overbey lost by pin in the first round to Cody Sleeman at 125 pounds.

Amirfar lost by pin in the first round to Trevor Machado-Ching at 140 pounds.

Spinella lost by pin in the first round to Everett Rodgers at 152 pounds.

The Bulldogs also forfeited two bouts (119, 171).

Ceres High will compete against Central Valley and Weston Ranch today at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium. The VOL tri-meet will begin at 4 p.m.
