CHS wrestlers compete at Riddle Invitational

The Ceres High varsity wrestling team finished in the top 20 at the James Riddle Classic on Saturday at Oakdale High School.

“There was a lot of good teams there,” Bulldogs coach Steve Vieira said. “We knew that going in.”

Vieira's wrestlers compiled a combined 11-20 record at the 24-team event.

Zack Van Wagoner went 3-2 in the 160-pound division. The junior won by decision three times (13-6, 8-3, 6-5). He lost via decision (8-3) and pin once.

“If he would have won his last match, he would have placed,” Vieira said.

Kyle Curry, Marc Dias and

Steven Chavez all went 2-2.

Curry won by pin twice, and lost by pin and major decision (9-1) once at 119 pounds.

Dias won by pin twice and lost by decision (11-10) and major decision (12-4) once at 135 pounds.

Chavez won by decision twice (16-10, 10-4), and lost by major decision twice (8-0, 17-2) at 171 pounds.

Brian Allen and Jake Keidel both went 1-2.

Allen won by pin once and lost by pin twice at 103 pounds.

“Brian keeps on improving every week,” Vieira said.

Keidel won by pin once and lost by decision twice (16-12, 9-7) at 140 pounds.

Jacob Lopez, Louis Bracamonte, Tony Chavez and Nathan Niemeyer all went 0-2.

Lopez lost by pin twice at 130 pounds.

Bracamonte lost by pin and major decision (15-0) once at 145 pounds.

Chavez lost by pin and decision (8-4) once at 152 pounds.

Niemeyer lost by major decision twice (14-3, 8-0) in the heavyweight division.

Two of Ceres High's four wrestlers placed at the Beyer JV Tournament on Saturday. Donnie Barker took second at 125 pounds. Will Horton took fourth at 140 pounds.

The varsity Bulldogs will participate in the Western Invitational this Friday and Saturday at Modesto Junior College.

The JV Bulldogs will be traveling to Waterford on Saturday to compete in the G.W. Wingo Tournament. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff reporter of the Ceres (Calif.) Courier
