CV boys win WAC dual-meet opener, girls suffer loss

Central Valley High School’s varsity boys cross country team managed to beat Pacheco this past week despite competing shorthanded.

The Hawks opened the Western Athletic Conference dual-meet portion of their schedule by earning a narrow 28-31 victory against the host Panthers.

“Ben Saldana is injured, so he did not run on Wednesday,” head coach Veronica Moreno said.

Jose Bastidas led Central Valley.  The junior finished second overall with a time of 19 minutes, 17 seconds on the three-mile course.

Hawk teammates Paul Hernandez (20:25), Anthony Carrillo (20:51), Gilberto Alvarez (21:21) and Inayat Sahota (21:56) placed fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth, respectively.

Pacheco’s Saul Godoy (18:51), Derrick Ratcliff (19:25), Gilberto Aranda (21:02) and Alejandro Perez (21:03) and Flavio Orozco (25:14) took first, third, sixth, seventh and 14th, respectively.

Panthers 18, Hawks 42

Central Valley High School’s varsity girls cross country team lost 18-42 to Pacheco last week.

Jessica Alvarez (fourth place, 25:06) paced the Hawks.

Central Valley’s Daisy Ochoa (sixth, 27:17), Jasmine Diaz (eighth, 27:38), Marissa Martinez (11th, 29:38), Adriana Cubillo (13th, 36:02) and Vanessa Del Toro (13th, 36:02) competed as well.

The Tigers were led by Jacki Gonzales (first, 23:20). Los Banos’ Venus Canaveral (second, 24:38), Stephanie Porras (third, 24:45), Cuchora Lavrez (fifth, 27:05) and Destiny Diaz (seventh, 27:27).
