East Union secured a 5-0 victory over the Central Valley High School girls tennis team in Valley Oak League play on Thursday in Manteca.

The final score didn't indicate how close the visiting Hawks (5-5) came to upsetting the Lancers. Three matches were decided in three sets.

"We played almost to dark," Central Valley coach Todd Russell said. "It was very competitive."

Melissa Gonzales lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to Amanda Baker at No. 1 singles. Gonzales led 4-1 in the first game and 5-2 in the second.

Anna Polovin lost 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to Cozette Heinz at No. 2 singles.

Jessica Gutierrez lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (7-4), 6-3 to Kristen Benedict at No. 3 singles.

Carissa Garcia and April Hernandez lost 6-1, 6-3 to Alyssa Wegner and Haylai Mohommadi at No. 1 doubles.

Erika Marmolejo and Jessica Rodriguez lost 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 6-0 to Alicia Cook and Kyrie Belme at No. 2 doubles.

Hawks 4, Lancers 1

Central Valley won three singles and a doubles match against East Union on Tuesday, Oct. 9 in Ceres.

Melissa Gonzales defeated Nicole Osborn 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

Anna Polovin defeated Bernice Rosas 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Jessica Gutierrez defeated Ericka Rice 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.

Erika Marmolejo and Jessica Rodriguez defeated Morgan Salsedo and Lexi Ziackas 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Carissa Garcia and April Hernandez fell 6-3, 6-2 to Cassie Gause and Kristen Teicheira at No. 2 doubles.

Central Valley will play host to the Weston Ranch Cougars on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Hawks are striving for their sixth league win.

"I'm happy with the way that everybody's progressing," Russell said.
