CV's Bonales thrives at Aiello tourney

Anthony Bonales expects to win every time he tees it up.

The Central Valley High School varsity boys sophomore golf star trumped more than 100 players while capturing first-place medalist honors at the 2012 Aiello Invitational on March 19 at Discovery Bay Country Club.

Anthony collected birdies on the first, fourth, 11th and 15th holes en route to firing an even-par 72. Bonales edged out Deer Valley's Jaskaran Sihota (73) and Foothill's Ryan Gronlund (74).

"I have a lot more confidence this year," Anthony said prior to the start of the 2012 season. "That makes a huge difference."

Central Valley posted a team score of 664 at the Aiello tournament.

Jacob Craig, Josh Boles, Francisco Gradilla and David Holland shot 123, 133, 158 and 178, respectively.

CC 211, CV 268

Central Valley lost 211-268 to defending Western Athletic Conference champion Central Catholic on March 20 at Dryden Park.

Bonales led the Hawks with a match-best 4-under-par 32.

He had four birdies (1st, 2nd, 4th and 7th).

Anthony narrowly missed birdies on the third and ninth holes.

Boles (55), Craig (58), Tranjit Singh (59) and Gradilla (64) rounded out Central Valley's scorecard.

Central Valley faced off against crosstown-rival Ceres High on Tuesday at River Oaks Golf Course. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Hawks will compete in the WAC Mid-Season Tournament this Thursday.
