Trailing by 10 points late in the second quarter, Ceres High School's freshman boys basketball team battled back for a 54-43 win over crosstown rival Central Valley on Friday at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.

"After we got caught up, we knew we were going to win," Bulldogs point guard Eric Madrigal said. "It means a lot. We're the best in the town."

Ceres High received solid contributions from a host of players, including Madrigal, Haydon Turpin, Caden Johnson, Josh Avila, Blake Hurst and Devon Ruger.

Turpin scored a game-high 12 points.

Johnson and Avila had 10 points apiece.

Madrigal, Hurst and Ruger added nine, eight and five points, respectively.

Central Valley had two members score in double figures: Hawk Duarte (15) and Daniel Alvarez (12). Victor Vizcarrondo tallied seven points. Abraham Navarro and Miguel Rodriguez both chipped in four points. Greg Gloria added one point.

The Bulldogs seized the momentum with a 32-8 run that started in the second quarter and ended in the final period.

Ceres High surrendered just 14 points after intermission.

"Moving the ball around helped a lot," Madrigal said. "We also pressured them and got some loose balls. It feels great beating our rival."
