Ceres High School's varsity boys water polo team inched closer to annexing its first league title in eight years this past week.

The Bulldogs took over sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for the first time since 2010 with a 13-6 win over Los Banos on Wednesday.

The two teams entered the match with identical 5-1 records.

Sophomore Zach Jones tallied a team-high five goals for Ceres High, which will capture the WAC crown outright this week with a victory against winless Livingston. The Bulldogs won a share of the Modesto Metro Conference title in 2004. Ceres High struggled to a 4-10 record last year.

Terry Brogdon and Dylan Browning both scored three goals.

Mario Gonzalez and Samuel Ochoa each contributed one goal.

First-year goalkeeper Anthony Vasquez had eight blocks.

"This is just the beginning," Brogdon said.

Added Jones: "It's definitely a lot different from last year. I love my team. We work very well together."

The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 11-1 in the second and fourth periods.

Terry and Zach, Ceres High's leaders, watched from the bench during the final two minutes.

"I didn't think we'd win by that much," said Jones, whose team held a slim 7-5 lead at intermission. "It was competitive for a half."

Los Banos won the first meeting, 12-10.
