Ceres High School's revamped varsity boys soccer squad beat East Union and Hilmar by identical scores of 3-2 in non-conference play at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park this past week.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-2-1 on the season. Ceres High returns just two starters from last year.

"We have a young team but they really understand what I'm trying to teach them," Bulldogs head coach Koeurn Phe said. "They have a high soccer IQ. They know how to play as a team."

Ceres High overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit against East Union.

"It wasn't easy," Phe said.

The Bulldogs used a 3-5-2 formation after intermission.

Humberto Luna played midfielder. He started at sweeper in the opening half.

"It was a risky move but it paid off," Phe said. "He won possessions and distributed the ball well."

Luna dished out one assist.

Alexis Galindo, Cristian Cabrales and Eberardo Aceves all scored once.

"We played with a never-give-up attitude," Phe said.

Galindo tallied two goals and Robert Hernandez added one in Ceres High's win over the Yellowjackets.

The Bulldogs scored first, broke a 1-1 tie, then escaped with a narrow victory.

"We allowed Hilmar to stick around in the game," Phe said. "We didn't finish up top. It could have easily been 7-1 or 7-2."
