The Downey High varsity boys soccer team has been on a roll since losing 2-1 to Ceres High on Sept. 14. The Knights exacted revenge and extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs on Friday in Modesto.

"Downey's a very strong team," said Ceres coach Ryan Cerny. "They totally outplayed us. They wanted it more."

First-place Downey improved to 6-1 in the Modesto Metro Conference. Third-place Ceres fell to 4-3 in the league standings.

The top two teams in the MMC advance to the playoffs in November.

"We're definitely still in it," Cerny said. "We play Downey one more time. We play (second-place) Johansen this week."

Simon Coppenolle scored a game-high two goals for the Knights. Lauro Garcia added one goal and an assist. Oscar Bozada tallied one goal. Adrian Mendoza and Martin Quirogo each had an assist. Goalkeeper Diego Vera made 10 saves. Sweeper Jesse Murillo was a force on defense.

"He just shut us down," Cerny said. "He was winning every ball in the air."

Ricardo Castellanos led the Bulldogs with one goal. Chris Martin picked up the assist. Goalie Ricardo Cetina registered 17 saves.

Ceres trailed 1-0 at the break. Garcia scored in the 28th minute for the Downey.

The Knights outscored the Bulldogs 3-1 in the second half on goals by Coppenolle and Oscar Bozada. Coppenolle scored in the 48th and 57th minutes. Bozada added a goal in the 46th minute.

Castellanos tallied the Bulldogs' lone goal in the 78th minute. He scored from 15 yards out off a pass from Chris Marlin.

"We had a lot of mental breakdowns," Cerny said. "A lot of the guys were bickering on the field. That's our biggest problem."

Ceres High edged Modesto High 2-1 on Wednesday at Ceres River Bluff Regional Park.
