The Ceres High cross country team held its annual award banquet in the school's cafeteria Thursday night.

Coach Glenn Driskell honored a host of runners during the hour-long celebration. Eight plagues were handed out.

"We had a decent turnout," Driskell said. "Twenty two of our 31 runners showed up."

For the second year in a row, Karrah Brown claimed the varsity girls Most Valuable Player award. The junior helped lead the Bulldogs to a third-place finish in the Modesto Metro Conference. She placed 21st in a field of 65 at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II meet.

"She was our most consistent runner," Driskell said.

Senior Brandi Bonillas won the varsity girls Most Improved Player award.

"She was one of several girls that improved quite a bit," Driskell said.

Benny Perez won the varsity boys Most Valuable Player award. The junior helped lead Ceres High to a 2-3 record in the league standings. He placed first against Beyer and Johansen, second against Davis and third against Modesto High and Downey. At the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section championships, Perez finished in 64th place.

"He was our best runner," Driskell said. "He was also our leader in practice."

Senior Pedro Cortes won the varsity boys Most Improved Player award. The senior trimmed more than five minutes off his 3-mile time.

"His improvement from the start of the season to the end was the best," Driskell said.

Henry Shamoeil won the frosh-soph boys Most Valuable Player award. The sophomore placed 28th at the section meet.

"That was the deciding factor," Driskell said.

Freshman Andre Walcott won the frosh-soph boys Most Improved Player award.

Nicole Laranjo won the frosh-soph girls Most Valuable Player award. The sophomore led the Bulldogs to a second-place finish at the section and sub-section finals. She was a major contributor at the varsity level during the regular season.
