Harriers compete at Woodward Park

Ceres High competed at the Roughrider Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno on Friday.

"Most of the kids ran pretty good times," said Ceres coach Glenn Driskell.

"It's the best competition we've been to this year," said Ceres coach Glenn Driskell. "There were a lot of good schools there."

The varsity teams didn't place.

Leading the way for the boys were Benny Perez, Jordan Gonzalez, Nick Gardner and Pedro Cortes.

Perez placed 72nd in a field of 160. He finished the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 29 seconds.

Gonzalez (19:06), Gardner (19:33) and Cortes (20:54) placed 107th, 121st and 144th, respectively

Leading the way for the girls were Karrah Brown, Sadie Tellez, Cynthia Brambila and Brandi Bonillas.

Brown placed 29th in a field of 145. She finished the 3.1-mile course in 21:24.

Tellez (26:09), Brambila (29:45) and Bonillas (30:01) placed 120th, 137th and 139th, respectively.

The frosh-soph teams did place.

The girls placed fifth in a field of 20 on the 2.1-mile course.

Three of Ceres' runners won medals, including Nicole Laranjo, Nichole Alvarez and Marisol Tapia.

Laranjo placed fourth in 14:44.

Alvarez placed 24th in 15:32.

Tapia placed 26th in 15:37.

Caitlin Cerny (16:33), Katie Lutes (17:38), Melanie Casey (17:52) and Nicole Caselli (20:31) placed 50th, 86th, 95th and 151st, respectively.

The boys placed 11th in a field of 15 on the 2.1-mile course.

Henry Shamoeil placed 35th in 13:20.

Alex Torres placed 38th in 13:21.

Andrew Chipponeri placed 56th in 13:46.

Ramsey Magana (14:12), Jonathan Esparza (14:13), Chad Hurt (14:34), Will Richards (16:48) and Darryl Lopez (17:16) placed 68th, 70th, 78th, 101st and 104th, respectively.

Dawgs split with Knights

The varsity girls were awarded a 15-50 victory over Downey on the 3.12-mile course at Legion Park on Wednesday.

"They only had three runners," Driskell said. "You need five to make a team or else you lose by forfeit."

Ceres improved to 3-1 in the Modesto Metro Conference.

Downey fell to 0-4 in the league standings.

Brown (21:00), Laranjo (23:51), Alvarez (24:13), Casey (26:15) and Tellez (26:17) placed first, third, fourth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

The varsity boys almost defeated Downey, the top team in the MMC, at Legion Park on Wednesday.

The Knights edged the Bulldogs by a score of 23-33.

"I was very pleased with how our kids competed today," Driskell said. "We gave them all they could handle."

The Bulldogs fell to 1-3 in the MMC. The Knights improved to 4-0 in the league standings.

Perez (18:10), Gonzalez (18:27), Gardner (19:11), Shamoeil (19:22) and Torres (19:39) placed third, fourth, seventh, eighth and 11th, respectively.
