Hawk grapplers medal at state

Eight members of the Ceres Hawks Wrestling Club traveled to Fresno in June to compete in the Dave Shultz Kids Freestyle State Championships.

Gabriel Taboa (Bantam Boys-40), Claudia Martinez (Novice Girls-75), Joshua Tidmarsh (Bantam Boys-65) and Trinity Hernandez (Intermediate Girls-55) all placed in their respective weight divisions.

"Overall, it was a really good experience for all of the kids," assistant coach Elias Hernandez said. "They gave it all they had. That was a real big positive."

Gabriel finished in second place with an impressive 4-1 record.

He beat C.L.A.W. Wrestling's Jacob Maradiaga by technical fall(6-0, 6-0), Tulare Hawkeyes' Wyatt Clubb by pin (1:27), Punisher Wrestling's Jonathan Fredrickson by technical fall ((8-1, 6-2) and East High Wrestling Club's Ashton Onsorez by decision (4-1, 3-2), Taboa lost by decision (6-0, 8-3) to Bad Donkey's George Rosas in the finals.

"He performed exceptionally well," Hernandez said. "He never stopped moving."

Claudia took third.

She lost by decision to Team G's Alyssa Baylon (2-1, 7-0) and Central Catholic Raiders' Sariyah Jones (2-0, 0-1, 4-1).

Joshua took fourth.

He beat CYC-Concord's Stephen Ramirez by technical fall (7-0, 10-2). He lost by decision (6-0, 5-1) to Drillers' Colton Leptich and technical fall (3-4, 6-0, 8-0) to Bronco Wrestling Club's Joseph Alaniz.

Trinity Hernandez placed fifth.

She lost by decision to Team Selma's Chelsy Mendoza (2-0, 2-0) and Stockton Elite Wrestling Club's Emily Rivas (6-0, 2-0).

Kyle Hendrix (Intermediate Boys-60), Luis Saucedo (Novice Boys-70), Ryan Hendrix (Novice Boys-70) and Elias Hernandez (Schoolboy-98) did not place. The quartet gained valuable experience.

Ryan defeated Poway Elite's Calvin Naraghi by decision (4-3, 4-3). He lost by technical fall (6-0, 10-2) to Eastside's Vincent Calandrelli and pin (0:35) to Stockton Elite Wrestling Club's Aaron Rugnao.

Kyle lost by technical fall (8-0, 8-0) to Team Selma's Luis Ramos and pin (1:38) to Dinuba Wrestling Club's Isaiah Perez.

Luis lost by pin to Perez (1:38) and Team Smack Down's Daniel Long (0:40).

Elias lost by pin to Nipomo Youth Wrestling Club's Mitchell Snyder (0:10) and Guadalupe Wrestling's Jose Gonzalez (1:23).

The Freestyle State Championship was staged at Selland Arena, June 5-7.
