Claudia Martinez made history on March 20 at Fresno's Selland Arena when she became the Ceres Hawks wrestling club's first-ever state champion.

The Whitmore Charter School fifth-grader finished in first place at the 2010 California Kids Folkstyle Championships.

"I knew she could do it," coach Jorge Saucedo said. "She's been so successful because she listens to what we say and puts it to work. I'm actually very proud of her."

Martinez won both of her matches while competing at 75 pounds in the Novice Girls Division.

Claudia Martinez defeated Molly Borders of Team Puma by major decision (10-2) and pin (3:31).

"She was really hungry," Saucedo said. "You could see her concentration in her face. She didn't get distracted."

Martinez participated in an all-girls tournament the week before in San Jose. She compiled a 3-1 record.

Claudio placed second in the Intermediate Girls Division's 70-pound bracket at the 2009 Kids Freestyle State Meet.

Martinez took home a championship belt from the 2010 Folkstyle end-of-year event.

Hawk teammate Luis Saucedo finished 0-2 in the Novice Boys 70-pound class.
