Central Valley High School held its fourth annual Back to School Summer Basketball Skills Camp, July 27-30.

The clinic was designed for students in grades 3-12.

"I thought more people would be here," said Darryl Dickson, camp director/varsity boys basketball coach. "We lowered the fee to $60 because of the tough economic times."

Jason Waddell, Harinder Sidhu, Olivia Cramer and Austin Burns were among the 30 campers that received 12 hours of instruction.

Each session started at 9 a.m. and ended at 12 p.m.

Players dedicated time to catching and passing, ball handling and dribbling, form shooting, and layups and jump shots.

Hawk varsity and junior-varsity basketball members demonstrated drills.

"It's not a race," Dickson said while camp participants completed a dribbling exercise.

Melinda Camarillo and Ryan Sandner assisted Olivia Cramer and Austin Burns, respectively, during a form-shooting drill on Tuesday, July 27.

Thirteen-year-old Cramer and Burns, 14, attend Whitmore Charter and Central Valley.

Waddell (10) and Sidhu (11) of Sinclear Elementary were second-year camp participants.

"I wanted to get more help so I could play basketball for my school again," Waddell said. "I've definitely gotten better because of the camp."

Added Sidhu: "I like free throws and 3-on-3."
