Hawks complete preseason

Central Valley High School's varsity girls basketball squad gained valuable experience while competing at the Liberty Ranch tournament, Dec. 13-15, in Galt.

"We sat and watched other teams play," Hawks head coach Jesse Padilla said. "The pace of the game is so much faster. We kept the high tempo. We ran them (Pitman and Atwater) off the floor."

Central Valley defeated Pitman and Atwater in non-conference play the week of Dec. 17-21 in Ceres.

The Hawks took control in the first half and held on for a 50-44 victory over Pitman on Dec. 19.

Central Valley won despite shooting just 54 percent (25 of 46) from the foul line.

Mia Lorenzo had 20 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and two blocks. Lorenzo converted 15 of 20 free throws, including seven in a row in the fourth quarter.

Brittany Martinez collected 10 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and four steals.

Ali Martinez contributed six assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Central Valley led 32-20 at the end of the third quarter.

The Pride outscored the Hawks 24-18 in the final period.

Central Valley prevailed, 38-33, versus Atwater on Dec. 18.

Brittany Martinez scored 19 points.

The Hawks held a 29-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"I'm not worried about winning and losing right now," Padilla said. "I just want the girls to play together. We got a good group of players. We've improved leaps and bounds."

CV seventh in Galt

The Hawks placed seventh at the Liberty Ranch tournament.

Central Valley dropped two of three games.

Brittany Martinez was selected to the all-tourney team. She averaged 18.7 points per game.

The Hawks edged out Sacramento's Encina Prep 52-51 on Saturday.

Lorenzo finished with 12 points and buried four free throws down the stretch.

Brittany Martinez totaled 17 points and 15 rebounds.

Galt defeated Central Valley 52-48 on Friday.

Lorenzo had 16 points.

Brittany Martinez and Jessica Martinez scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Central Valley lost 71-31 to Capital Christian on Thursday.

Brittany Martinez collected 25 points.

The Hawks compiled a 5-7 record during the preseason.

Central Valley will begin the Western Athletic Conference part of its schedule today.

The Hawks will travel to Patterson for a 7:30 p.m. game.
