Hawks end conference losing streak

The members of Central Valley High School's varsity swim program were in a jovial mood after Friday's Valley Oak league dual meet finale.

Jesus Espinoza's excessive celebration elicited laughs from his teammates. He hoisted a trophy that he found in a nearby storage shed in the air.

"We finally won," Hawk standout Victor Cruz said.

Central Valley broke into the win column for the first time this year by sweeping Weston Ranch at Ceres High.

The Hawks won the girls competition, 82-56.

Cierra Alvear placed first in the 200 IM and 100 fly.

Taylor Rogers placed first in the 200 free and 100 free.

Michaela Silber placed first in the 500 free.

Stephanie Muci placed second in the 500 free.

Kate Gaede placed second in the 200 IM.

Arleigh Meek placed second in the 100 back

Cassie Dunn placed second in the 200 free.

Jasmine Smith placed second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 free.

Emma Stone placed third in the 100 breast.

Melissa Amezcua placed fourth in the 50 free.

Tiffany Tovar placed fifth in the 50 free.

Felicia Surber placed fourth in the 100 back and fifth in the 100 free.

The 200 medley relay team of Dunn, Alvear, Smith and Rogers placed first.

The 200 free relay team of Alvear, Dunn, Gaede and Rogers placed first.

The 400 free relay team of Dunn, Stone, Haley Tessaro and Shelby Ruskamp placed second.

Central Valley's boys outscored the Cougars, 64-46.

Cruz finished first in the 200 IM and 100 free.

A.J. Turkin finished first in the 100 breast and second in the 50 free.

Victor Tubera finished first in the 100 back and third in the 50 free.

Andrew Vazquez finished first in the 500 free.

Espinoza finished second in the 200 free and 100 free.

Kevin Rodriguez finished second in the 100 fly and 100 back.

Chris Lugo finished third in the 100 breast and fourth in the 100 free.

The 200 medley relay team of Cruz, Lugo, Rodriguez and Turkin finished second.

The 200 free relay team of Cruz, Tubera, Espinoza and Turkin finished second.

Central Valley head coach Julie Alvarado and her swimmers huddled near the bleachers following the conclusion of the day's final race.

"I'm really pleased," she said. "Everyone did well."

The Hawks will look to improve their times at the VOL championships this Saturday in Manteca. Sierra High will host the eight-team meet.
