Hawks finish 2-1-1, Bulldogs winless at Hampson event

Central Valley's and Ceres High's baseball teams competed in different pools at the Lee Hampson Tournament this past week.

The Hawks collected two wins, one loss and one tie in Pool D at Beyer High School and improved to 6-2-2 in summer league play.

"Overall, it was a really good showing," Central Valley head coach Greg Magni said.

Central Valley lost 12-0 to tournament runner-up Lincoln of Stockton Saturday morning.

The Hawks committed five errors while allowing seven runs in the bottom of the first inning during the mercy-rule shortened contest.

Central Valley defeated Beyer 10-5 on Friday.

Michael Ereso was the winning pitcher. He lasted five innings.

Isaiah Gonzales doubled and knocked in three runs.

Younger brother Angel Gonzales collected two RBIs.

Central Valley and Atwater battled to a 5-5 tie in a time-limit shortened game on Thursday.

The Hawks rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ereso singled, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on Jorge Alvarez's sacrifice fly.

Central Valley pounded Patterson 9-3 on Wednesday.

Ruben Casas turned in a dominant pitching performance. He allowed just one hit and retired seven of 12 batters via strikeout in four innings.

Shorthanded Ceres High posted an 0-3-1 record in Pool B at Oakdale High School.

The Bulldogs' starting lineup consisted of a mix of varsity and junior-varsity players.

Jimbo Pernetti, Haydon Turpin, Brad Bussard, Brent Bussard, Jimmy Bates and Dylan Canatsy were absent.

Pernetti and Turpin were busy playing travel baseball.

Bates and Canatsy competed in a basketball tournament in San Diego.

Brad and Brent attended the Washington State Football Camp.

"They had other commitments," assistant coach Rudy Conway said.

Ceres High tied Calaveras 3-3 Saturday morning.

Bulldog pitcher Evan Duran gave up three hits and struck out 13 in 61/3 innings.

Brett Conway batted 2-for-3 from the plate.

Ceres High lost 8-3 to Golden Valley Friday afternoon.

Brett tripled, singled and knocked in two runs on offense.

The Bulldogs suffered a 5-0 loss against Enochs Friday morning.

Conway, Ceres High's catcher, threw out four baserunners.

Duran, Alan Marquez and Merrik Price all singled.

Ceres High kept the game close early before losing 13-4 to Oakdale on Thursday.

Alan singled twice.

Ceres High and Central Valley will wrap up their summer schedules this week.

The Hawks will host Turlock today (2:30 p.m.) and play at Patterson on Thursday (3 p.m.).

The Bulldogs will participate in the Vermeulen Tournament. Ceres High will face Gregori (9:30 a.m.), and Modesto (12 p.m.) on Thursday, and the Knights on Friday (2:30 p.m.) at Downey High School. The Bulldogs' second opponent on Friday will be Johansen (5 p.m.). That game will be played at Beyer.
