Hawks open WAC season with back-to-back tennis victories

Central Valley High School's varsity girls tennis team won just two matches during its final season in the Valley Oak League in 2009.

The Hawks opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 7-2 win against Livingston on Tuesday, Sept. 7 in Ceres.

"They were pretty excited to start the season off with a win," Central Valley head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "It shows we're headed in the right direction."

The Hawks won five singles and two doubles matches against the Wolves.

Jasmine Martinez defeated Andrea Garcia 6-4, 6-0 in No. 2 singles play.

Victoria Ochoa (No. 3), Elizabeth Amaya (No. 4), Cinthia Ramos (No. 5) and Crystal Guzman (No. 6) won their singles matches as well.

Ochoa, Amaya, Ramos and Guzman beat Yvette Fuentes (7-5, 6-1), Annie Ahmed (6-0, 6-1), Kamalpreet Mahal (6-3, 6-1) and Manpreet Atwal (6-3, 6-0), respectively.

Krystal Ramirez and Jennifer Quezada, Central Valley's No. 2 doubles team, swept Maria Castro and Esther Calderon (6-2, 6-2).

Jessica Berndt and Kiara Bucio edged Gurleen Atwal and Noelyn Ponce 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in No. 3 doubles play.

Central Valley had a successful debut in the WAC despite competing with a revamped lineup.

Covarrubias , Martinez and Avila are returners.

Ochoa, Ramos, Guzman, Ramirez, Quezada, Berndt, Bucio and Germann are first-year players.

"We're not the most technically-sound team but we're pretty athletic," Rodriguez said. "I expect us to be better than last year. We might not win a lot of matches but we're going to be competitive."

Hawks 7, Tigers 2

Central Valley secured a 7-2 win against Patterson on Wednesday in Ceres.

Covarrubias defeated Cathertine McCullom, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Martinez defeated Elsa Miranda, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

Amaya defeated Sonia Jimenez, 6-0, 6-2.

Ramos defeated Elsa Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-1.

Guzman defeated Jenifer Cambellos, 6-4, 6-3.

Ramirez and Quezada defeated Kendie Norfleet and Kelby Norfleet, 6-2, 6-3.

Berndt and Bucio defeated Sandy Luo and Lizette Sandoval, 6-4, 6-1.
