Central Valley High School's varsity volleyball team quadrupled its Valley Oak League win total from last year in 2008.
The Hawks posted a 4-10 record.
"My goal was to get the girls dedicated," first-year head coach Tauheedah Gaines said. "They put out the effort and the results showed. There was tremendous improvement. It's more than I expected."
Central Valley finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings with Ceres High and East Union.
The Hawks beat East Union and winless Weston Ranch (0-14) twice.
Central Valley got swept by Ceres High, a team that went 0-2 against East Union.
"We're upset that we lost to them," Gaines said. "We could have beat them."
Central Valley edged Weston Ranch 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-11, 15-9 on Monday, Nov. 3 in Stockton for its fourth league victory.
Alyssa Long led the Hawks with seven kills, four aces and two blocks. Ruby Ramirez tallied nine assists. Kayla Lolkus added five digs.
Central Valley ended its VOL season with a 25-9, 25-10, 25-11 loss to first-place Sonora on Wednesday at Bud Castle Gym.
Long finished with five kills, seven digs and two blocks. Ramirez accumulated 10 assists and two aces. Lolkus totaled seven digs.
The Hawks have had a different head coach each season during their three-year history.
Gaines will be back on the sidelines at Central Valley in 2009. She has a strong desire to build a winning program.
"The girls are excited," Tauheedah said. "I'm ready to get started for the summer. Hopefully, we'll have a way better season next year. It's going to be a challenge."
