Central Valley High School's varsity girls basketball team failed in its attempt last week to gain some much-needed momentum heading into league.

The Hawks lost 56-41 to Sonora on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 57-48 to Central Fresno on Monday, Dec. 29 and 49-26 to Turlock on Saturday, Dec. 27 en route to an eighth-place finish at the Turlock-Pitman Community Spirit Tournament.

"I definitely think we should have done better," senior guard Julie Calderon said. "We were really hoping to win a couple of games. But we didn't take care of the ball and finish at the basket. Hopefully, we'll do a lot better (in conference play)."

Sonora defeated Central Valley for seventh-place.

Phylicia Martinez led the Hawks in scoring with 12 points. Amanda Lopez had 10 points.

Calderon, Whitney Richardson, Alyssa Long and Giselle Mendoza tallied eight, five, four and two points apiece.

Tori Selesia led the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points. Kelli Keefe and Sereena Hertel finished with 11 and nine points, respectively.

Central Valley fell behind 34-25 in the first half.

The Wildcats outscored the Hawks 22-16 in the second half.

With the loss, the Hawks dropped to 4-8 overall. Sonora dealt Central Valley its fourth straight loss and improved to 5-5 on the year.

Central Valley opens the Valley Oak League portion of its schedule this week with contests against visiting Manteca on Tuesday, Jan. 6 and host Weston Ranch on Thursday.
