Ashton Urena’s outstanding play as a key member of Ceres High’s baseball program earned him league recognition for the second year in a row.
Urena and Bulldog teammates Anthony Trevino, Isaac Moreno and Mario Vargas were honored during the Western Athletic Conference head coaches’ meeting last month in Ceres.
“I’m glad we had some players get recognized,” Ceres High leader Bret Durossette stated. “Finishing fourth (in the WAC standings), we were pretty fortunate to get what we got.”
Urena and Trevino were both selected to the WAC First Team.
Urena, a senior, logged playing time at shortstop and pitcher.
“We leaned on him a lot,” Durossette said.
Urena batted .447 from the plate with one triple, four doubles, 15 RBIs, 12 runs and one stolen base.
He ranked first on the team in batting average, triples and RBIs, and third in doubles and runs.
Urena compiled a 3-2 record on the mound with 17 strikeouts in 31 innings.
“He’s the full-package,” Durossette said. “He has all the tools.”
Urena starred on Ceres High’s varsity baseball team for two seasons.
He was voted the WAC’s Utility Player of the Year as a junior.
He posted a .394 batting average with three home runs, one triple, 10 doubles, 47 RBIs, 44 runs, 14 walks and 15 stolen bases in 52 career games.
He had a 10-8 record at pitcher with 107 strikeouts, one no-hitter and two complete games in 991/3 innings.
“Ashton was our leader,” Durossette said. “He’s an awesome kid. We’re going to miss him.”
Trevino, a junior corner infielder, batted .359 from the plate with one triple, five doubles, nine RBIs, 17 runs and five stolen bases.
He made just four errors on defense while posting a fielding percentage of .907.
Trevino ranked first on the team in triples and runs, second in doubles, fourth in RBIs and stolen bases, and fifth in batting average.
“Anthony did everything for us this year,” Durossette said. “He was a big threat.”
Moreno earned first-team all-WAC accolades.
The sophomore catcher batted .382 from the plate with one triple, four doubles, 15 RBIs, 18 runs and eight stolen bases.
He committed just two errors while posting a .977 fielding percentage.
He ranked first on the team in triples, RBIs, runs and stolen bases, third in doubles, and fourth in batting average.
Moreno started in right field as a freshman.
“I thought Isaac should have been First Team,” Durossette said. “He had an awesome year. He worked hard. He’s a great kid.”
Vargas, a junior, logged playing time at third base, shortstop and pitcher.
The third-year starter batted .342 from the plate with one double, five RBIs, 13 runs and six stolen bases.
He ranked second on the team in runs, third in stolen bases, and seventh in batting average and RBIs.
“Mario is a competitor,” Durossette said. “He just wants to play.”
Ceres High placed fourth in the 2026 WAC standings with a 9-5 record.
The Bulldogs opened conference play with five consecutive wins.
Hurt by a lack of depth, Ceres High lost five of its final nine league games.
“We started the year off hot,” Durossette said. “Some injuries ended up hurting us. We still had a good year. We finished above .500. We were one game away from playoffs. We lost to Davis and Beyer. Had we won those games, we would have made it.”
Ceres High will lose just one player to graduation in Urena.
All-league standouts Trevino, Moreno and Vargas could return to the team next spring, along with Gabe Malagon, Junior Sombrerero, Jake Oliver, Jose Ortiz, Isaiah Reyes, Steven Burciaga and Malyki Reedy.
“We only had 10 players this season,” Durossette said. “Hopefully, more kids come out for the team next year.”
