Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s undefeated boys golf teams faced off in league play for the first time in two years this past month.
The Hawks relocated from the Central California Conference to the Western Athletic Conference for just this season due to travel and safety issues related to COVID-19.
The Bulldogs won the crosstown battle decisively, 179-229, on March 23 at St. Stanislaus Golf Course.
“It means a lot,” Ceres High fourth-year standout Visa Homsombath said. “Seeing everybody do well was the most memorable part. I’m proud of my team.”
All five of the Bulldogs’ players posted scores in the 30s during the WAC South Division match.
Junior Erik Hott led Ceres High (6-0) with a 2-par 30.
Sophomore Jayson Homsombath and senior Jaden Borba shot 33 and 38, respectively.
Visa Homsombath and freshman Matthew Saragoza finished with identical rounds of 39.
Junior Matteo Bonales led the Hawks (5-1) with a 36.
Junior Dylan Jacobson, sophomore Dillon Brush, sophomore Brandyn Matusich and junior Alijah Lopez shot 38, 47, 53 and 55, respectively.
“We’ve beat every team in our league,” Visa Homsombath said. “I’m not surprised we’re undefeated. We all play golf and practice together outside of school. The talent level is the same.”
“We’ll win the WAC title if we play like we are right now,” he added. “The whole team has to be consistent.”
