Ceres High wrestlers split with Hawks

The members of Ceres High’s boys and girls wrestling programs competed against crosstown-rival Central Valley last week.

No longer in the same conference due to the Sac-Joaquin Section’s realignment plan, Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s varsity wrestling programs continued their rivalry this past week with non-league boys and girls dual meets. 

The Bulldogs stormed back for a 42-38 win over the Hawks in boys action on Wednesday at Central Valley.

Bryan Erenas’ first-round pin of Elijah DeLeon during their 138-pound matchup propelled the Bulldogs past the Hawks. 

“All he’s done is step up and win big matches for us since day one,” Festa said. “We’re lucky to have him on the team.”

Marcus Martinez, Brian Ayala, Argel Arroyo, Elias Saldana, Aram Garibay-Garcia and Sonald Lal also contributed to the Bulldogs’ team point total.

Martinez won by first-round pin over Juan Melgoza at 126 pounds.

Ayala won by first-round pin over Antonio Castillo at 132 pounds.

Arroyo won by first-round pin over Thomas Carrillo at 220 pounds.

Saldana won by first-round pin over Moises Galeana at 285 pounds.

Aram won by second-round pin over Nicholas Genasci at 106 pounds.

Lal won by forfeit at 113 pounds.

Davian Lemus, Ruben Valenzuela, Juan Lezama, Ryan Palecek, David Martinez, Kyle Hendrix and Eric Rivera accounted for Central Valley’s individual victories.

Lemus won by first-round pin over Nathaniel Python at 120 pounds.

Valenzuela won by first-round pin over Angel Figueroa at 170 pounds.

Lezama won by second-round pin over Israel Esparza at 182 pounds.

Palecek won by third-round pin over Allen Thy at 195 pounds.

Martinez won by technical fall over Fernando Gonzalez at 160 pounds.

Hendrix won by decision over Edison Jimenez at 145 pounds.

Rivera won by forfeit at 152 pounds.

Hawks 60, Dawgs 24

Central Valley’s varsity girls wrestling team rolled to a 60-24 victory against visiting Ceres High on Nov. 28.

Abigal Garcia, Nia Caraway, Samantha Espinoza, Alyssa Chaboya, Vanesa Contreras, Kelsy Naranjo, Kimberly Garcia, Aryanna Jimenez, Brianna Quiroz and Alexis Ramirez guided the Hawks to a one-sided win.

Garcia won by first-round pin over Alyssa Medina at 126 pounds.

Caraway won by second-round pin over Dalia Martinez at 150 pounds.

Espinoza won by second-round pin over Kyara Rodriguez at 189 pounds.

Chaboya won by forfeit at 101 pounds.

Contreras won by forfeit at 106 pounds.

Naranjo won by forfeit at 111 pounds.

Garcia won by forfeit at 116 pounds.

Jimenez won by forfeit at 121 pounds.

Quiroz won by forfeit at 160 pounds.

Ramirez won by forfeit at 170 pounds.

Ceres High’s Angelique Huerta, Jazzmin Suarez, Alexandra Lugo and Vanessa Sanchez all collected victories versus Central Valley.

Suarez won by first-round pin over Kimberly Hernandez at 137 pounds.

Lugo won by first-round pin over Elena Markham at 143 pounds.

Sanchez won by second-round pin over Angelina Sanchez at 235 pounds.
