Hit hard by graduation, Ceres High's varsity boys soccer team continues to surprise its head coach.

"We lost most of our starters from last year," said Miguel Saldate, whose team remained unbeaten on the year at 6-1-0 after topping Johansen, Hughson and Hilmar last week. "We're starting over. We'll find out how good we are once league starts."

Goalkeeper Martin Reyes blocked 12 shots during Thursday's 2-0 victory over host Johansen.

Ulises Diaz and Enrique Montalvo both scored one goal for the Bulldogs.

Diaz tallied a hat trick while leading visiting Ceres High past Hughson 8-0 on Sept. 2.

Brandon Garcia, Osvaldo Padilla, Adrian Espinoza, George Aguayo and Aaron Victoria all chipped in with one goal each.

Montalvo had one assist.

Reyes made four saves.

Diaz scored twice as Ceres High bested Hilmar 3-2 on Sept. 1 at Bulldog Stadium.

Garcia tallied one goal.

Reyes had four saves.

The Bulldogs will wrap up their preseason schedule this week.

Ceres High will play at East Union on Thursday. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m.

"Right now, we're playing friendlies," Saldate said. "Once league starts, it's different. We'll face tougher competition."
