Central Valley’s boys golf program accomplished its goal at the Western Athletic Conference Championships this past month in Modesto.

Crosstown-rival Ceres High also showed improvement.

The Hawks finished fourth overall at the eight-team tournament staged on April 28 at the par-72 Dryden Park Golf Course.

Central Valley leapfrogged Grace Davis in the WAC standings.

“We were in fifth place behind Davis going into the WAC finals,” head coach Scott Edwards said. “We were chasing Davis for three weeks.”

The Hawks (512) topped the Spartans (537) by 25 strokes at the year-end conference tournament.

“We had a group of guys that played good rounds,” Edwards said. “We peaked at the right time.”

Freshman Adolfo Diaz led Central Valley with a 17-over-par 89 at the WAC Championships.

He didn’t perform like a ninth grader.

“He had a fantastic round,” Edwards said. “Nothing seems to bother him. Whether he’s having a good or bad day, he has fun.”

Juniors William Montes and Emmanuel Campos finished with rounds of 96 and 99, respectively.

“That was expected from William,” Edwards said. “He’s been progressing throughout the season. Emmanuel was steady all year long.”

Junior Guranjan Singh and sophomore Luke Garcia posted identical scores of 114.

“It was one of Guranjan’s better days,” Edwards said. “Luke just started playing golf in November. He has a lot of room for improvement.”

Diaz, Montes, Campos, Singh, Garcia, Javier Medina (Sr.), Kevin Medina (Fr.) and Jamie Tsutui (Fr.) made up Central Valley’s eight-person roster this spring.

“We steadily improved throughout the season,” Edwards said.

Newcomers to the WAC, Central Valley previously competed in the Central California Conference.

“We went into the season blind,” Edwards said. “We didn’t know what the other teams had.”

“The WAC is a better fit for us,” he added. “We’re working with similar kids. We’re where we should be.”

Ceres High finished sixth overall with a team score of 582 at the WAC finals.

Zack Chastain led the Bulldogs with a 101.

Sean Johnson (115), Roy Randaz (115), Alexander Ortega (116) and Michael Krepela (135) rounded out Ceres High’s scorecard.

Chastain, Johnson, Randaz, Ortega, Krepela and Manuel Valencia made up the Bulldogs’ six-person roster.

Montes, Campos, Diaz and Chastain all extended their seasons.

Montes, Campos, Diaz and Chastain earned the WAC’s No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 individual berths, respectively, to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Tournament.

Johnson was named an alternate.
