Edgar "Pork Chop" Castillo had Central Valley High School's gymnasium rocking this past week.

Castillo surprised himself by pinning fellow varsity boys heavyweight grappler Cesar Jimenez in the first round during the Hawks' 48-24 triumph over the Pacheco Panthers on Jan. 16 in Ceres.

"I could feel the rumbles on the floor," Edgar said. "I looked over and everyone was cheering."

Central Valley improved to 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference dual-meet standings.

Pacheco dropped to 0-3.

"We have a young group," head coach Rob Beckhart said. "They have the potential to be very good for years to come."

Castillo, Natanael Lezama, Thomas Carrillo, Anthony Voss, Michael Duran, James Murphy, David Martinez and Jesse Vazquez accounted for the Hawks' eight individual victories versus the Panthers.

Castillo pinned Jimenez with 14 seconds remaining in the opening period.

"I wasn't expecting to lose," Edgar said. "I didn't expect to win in that fashion. He was bigger. He looked quicker when he was warming up. I proved myself wrong. I don't know how to explain it. It's a euphoric feeling."

Added Central Valley head coach Rob Beckhart: "I'm happy for him (Castillo). His hard work is paying off."

Castillo admitted he doesn't strike fear into opponents.
"I'm not built like a wrestler, maybe a competitive eater," he said.

"He's underestimated by some people," Beckhart said.

Edgar's nickname was given to him by his wrestling coach at Blaker-Kinser Jr. High.

"Half the school knows me by that name," he said. "There's no way of getting rid of it."

Lezama won by pin (0:54) against Isaiah Silva at 220 pounds.

Carrillo won by pin (1:13) against Michael Carbajal at 195 pounds.

Voss won by pin (1:17) against Edwin Valdivia at 120 pounds.

Duran won by pin (2:57) against Julian Andrade at 126 pounds.

Murphy won by pin (3:05) against Jose Villasenor at 152 pounds.

Martinez and Vazquez won by forfeit at 170 and 106 pounds, respectively.

Central Valley's Kyle Hendrix lost by decision (7-3) to Pacheco's Jose Navarro at 132 pounds.
Roman Ramirez lost by decision (10-6) to Jaime Garcia at 145 pounds.

Ryan Palecek lost by pin (3:21) to Daniel Aparicio at 182 pounds.

Alan Chavez lost by pin (1:21) to Diony Navarro at 138 pounds.

Nathan Curry lost by pin (0:59) to Anthony Velasquez at 160 pounds.

There was a double forfeit at 113 pounds.

Central Valley will look to keep its unbeaten streak alive against WAC competition this week.

The Hawks will compete against the Patterson Tigers and Livingston Wolves.
