The 2022 prep football season is fast approaching.

Central Valley and Ceres High will travel to different locations this week for full-contact scrimmages.

The Hawks will compete at a six-team event at Modesto’s Downey High School this Friday at 7 p.m.

“One of the biggest things with a scrimmage every year is to see how your team reacts to the physicality,” Hawks’ head coach Derrick Goblirsch said. “A lot of our guys are making the jump from JV to varsity. I’m excited to see what they can do.”

“We’re running a new system,” he added. “We want to make sure the kids understand the concepts and what we’re trying to do.”

The Hawks will face Kimball, Beyer and Downey on the North Field.

“We have an idea where we’re at depth-wise,” Goblirsch said. “But there are definitely some surprises every year. Hopefully, we have more than one.”

The Bulldogs will participate in an eight-team scrimmage this Friday at Orestimba High School in Newman.

The event will get underway at 7 p.m.

“It’s definitely exciting to get some contact against somebody else,” Bulldogs’ leader Clinton Goblirsch said.

Ceres High will compete against Orestimba, El Capitan and Dos Palos.

Patterson, East Union, Lathrop and West of Tracy round out the eight-team scrimmage.

“We set some depth charts,” Clinton Goblirsch said. “But there are always times for guys to prove themselves when they step on the field.”
