Central Valley High School fielded its first-ever varsity wrestling team in 2006-07.

The Hawks made history last week.

Central Valley captured the Western Athletic Conference dual-meet regular season crown-its first league team title in the sport-with a 40-30 victory at Los Banos on Jan. 23.

The Tigers placed first in the WAC the previous three years.

"There's a lot of excitement at our school right now," Hawks head coach Rob Beckhart said. "Everybody is talking about it. It's good to see the kids be successful.
They've been working hard since the summer."

Central Valley improved to 11-1 on the year and 5-0 in the WAC.

The Hawks secured the conference's No. 1 seed for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Team Duals.

"We expected to be here," Beckhart said. "We have a good group of seniors that led the way. I also give credit to the Ceres Hawks youth program. It prepared the kids for the high-school level."

Central Valley freshman Jonathan Robinson won by first-round pin (1:06) over Los Banos 115-pounder Christian McEntire.

Robinson filled in for freshman Christian Oliver, who was sidelined with a skin infection.

"There was a lot of pressure on him (Robinson) and he performed," Beckhart said.

Hawk teammates Adrian Badillo, Rick Brown, Eddy Nunez, Adrian Vizcaino, Ethan Rotondo, Cristian Garcia and Michael Manzur were victorious as well.

Badillo won by pin (1:31) over Michael Hernandez at 184 pounds.

Brown won by pin (2:53) over David Melendez at 172 pounds.

Nunez won by pin (3:31) over Dalton Brooks at 162 pounds.

Vizcaino won by pin (4:31) over Daniel Fernandez at 197 pounds.

Rotondo won by major decision (13-1) over Jeremiah Diaz at 108 pounds.

Garcia won by decision (8-2) over Andrew Cintora at 147 pounds.

Manzur won by decision (7-3) over Josh Bustamante at 128 pounds.

Central Valley's Severo Vazquez, Jose Castillo, Luis Torres, Cesar Yepiz, Jose Medina and Ricardo Briseno dropped their respective matches.

Vazquez lost by technical fall (17-0) to Victor Leal at 134 pounds.

Castillo lost by decision (5-0) to Fernando Mendoza at 140 pounds.

Torres lost by pin (3:12) to Jesus Valdez at 154 pounds.

Yepiz lost by major decision (10-1) to Bailey Rodriguez at 222 pounds.

Medina lost by pin (4:24) to Evan Duran at 285 pounds.

Briseno lost by pin (1:33) to Tyler Felix at 122 pounds.

Central Valley ended Los Banos' three-year reign.

"That's a team that's not used to losing, especially at home," Beckhart said.

The Hawks will close out the WAC dual-meet season against visiting Patterson this Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Central Valley will compete at Team Sections on Saturday at Lincoln of Stockton.

"We accomplished one of our main goals," Beckhart said. "But our kids aren't done wrestling yet. We want to put an exclamation point on the end of the season."
