Ceres High School's varsity girls soccer team had to settle for a split during the opening week of Western Athletic Conference play.

"I expected us to do better," Bulldogs head coach Miguel Saldate said.

Ceres High and El Capitan tied 1-1 on Wednesday at Bulldog Stadium.

"I knew it was going to be competitive," said Saldate, whose team improved to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the WAC standings. "El Capitan has a good team. We had more chances to score. They didn't go in. Otherwise, it would have been our game."

Breanna Moreno accounted for the Bulldogs' lone goal.

Ceres High goalkeeper Angelmarie Coral totaled eight saves.

The Bulldogs and Gauchos battled to a 0-0 tie in the opening half.

Moreno scored from 20 yards out in the 55th minute.

El Capitan evened the score eight minutes later.

Ceres High pounded visiting Pacheco 8-1 on March 14.

"I thought it would be more of a challenge," Saldate said. "We had the ball most of the game."

Miranda Wilds collected four goals and one assist.

Mariah Trevino had two goals.

Moreno and Karina Torrez both scored once.

Dominique Koeurn dished out two assists.

Ceres High squandered an opportunity to earn six points in WAC play last week.

The Bulldogs were awarded three points for the victory and one for the tie.

"It hurts a little bit losing points like that knowing we had the game," Saldate said. "Our shots weren't going in."
