Hawks, Dawgs earn all-star invitations

Central Valley's Ruben Casas and Michael Ereso, and Ceres High's Jimbo Pernetti, Brandon Arevalos and Haydon Turpin have been selected to play in the 24th Annual Modesto Sunrise Rotary Baseball Classic this weekend in Modesto.

Casas, Ereso, Pernetti, Arevalos and Turpin will try to help lead the East past the West on Saturday at Thurman Field. The contest will get underway at 7:05 p.m.

Jimbo, Brandon and Ruben played in the all-star game as juniors. The East salvaged a 7-7 tie with the West.

"It was a great experience last year," Pernetti said. "It's pretty special to get chosen to play in it again. I love playing under the lights. I hope I can do that in the future too."

The Bulldogs and Hawks posted a combined record of 39-16-1 during the regular season.

Central Valley participated in the playoffs for the first time in its seven-year history, compiled a program-best 19-9 record and finished third in the Western Athletic Conference standings (6-6).

Ceres High posted a 20-7-1 record, qualified for the postseason for the second year in a row and placed second in the WAC (10-2).

Casas (Sr., P/SS) was voted WAC MVP.

Ruben compiled a 9-3 record with a 2.76 ERA, 87 strikeouts, one shutout and three complete games.

He hit .361 with two homers, five triples, six doubles, 24 RBIs, 24 runs and seven stolen bases.

Michael (Jr., P/1B) earned second-team, all-conference honors.

He batted .425 with two doubles, 15 RBIs, 30 runs and five stolen bases.

Ereso, Central Valley's No. 2 pitcher, finished 5-5 with a 2.92 ERA, 51 strikeouts, two shutouts and five complete games.
Pernetti, Arevalos and Turpin were selected to the WAC First Team.

Jimbo (Sr., SS) batted .525 with four homers, two triples, 12 doubles, 27 RBIs and 35 runs and five stolen bases.

Brandon (Sr., OF) batted .448 with four homers, one triple, six doubles, 21 RBIs and 20 runs.

Haydon (Sr., P) compiled an 8-3 record with a 2.36 ERA, 113 strikeouts, 22 walks, two shutouts and four complete games.
