Hawks defeat Gauchos in tennis

Central Valley High School’s girls tennis team played three league matches in a four-day span this past week. 

The Hawks broke into the Central California Conference win column with a 5-4 victory over El Capitan on Sept. 13 in Ceres.

“It’s a good start,” Central Valley coach Nimrat Chahal said. “The girls are excited. For a lot of them, this was their first (career team) win as well.”

The Hawks (1-2) took three of six singles and two of three doubles matches from the Gauchos.

“As the match started, we felt we had a good chance at winning,” Chahal said. “We’ll be a better team next time we play them.”

Giselle Mendez and Jasleen Kaur prevailed 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles to secure the team victory.

“They didn’t realize they clinched it,” Chahal said. “They stepped up. When they’re focused, they play well together. They’re great athletes. They’re both aggressive and move around the court.”

Samantha Perez-Mendez prevailed 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3 singles.

Kaitlyn Teng prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Lliria Lira prevailed 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

Analy Gomez and Marlene Jaquez prevailed 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Angie Medrano lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at at No. 1 singles.

Lesly Rivas lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Lizeth Cazarez lost 6-4, 7-6 at No. 6 singles.

Alondra Robles and Liana Guzman lost 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Central Valley was beaten 7-2 by Atwater on Sept. 15 in Ceres.

The Hawks dropped four of six singles and all three doubles matches to the Falcons.

Medrano won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

Lira won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

Rivas lost 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Perez-Mendez lost 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Teng lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Cazarez lost 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.

Gomez and Jaquez lost 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Robles and Aleena Higle lost 5-7, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Mendez and Kaur lost 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Central Valley sustained a 9-0 loss at Patterson on Sept. 12.

The Hawks dropped all six singles and three doubles matches to the Tigers.

Rivas lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

Perez-Mendez lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Teng lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Lira lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Cazarez lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.

Gomez and Jaquez lost 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.

Mendez and Kaur lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Higle and Brianna Olson lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
