Central Valley varsity boys tennis teammates Ruben Morales and Manuel Lazcano both had the feeling of déjà vu when the bracket was completed for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-II Doubles Championships.

Morales and Lazano drew the No. 1 seed for the second consecutive season.

"It's randomly drawn out of a hat," Hawks head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "Unfortunately, we haven't had the best of luck. We got the top seed two years straight."

Morales and Lazcano lost 6-1, 6-1 to Laguna Creek's Jan Silva and Jason Ni on May 15 at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.

Silva and Ni defeated Rio Americano's third-seeded doubles tandem of Mark Vyrian and Vincent Pogson, 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.

"They ran into the top team that ended up winning the tournament," Rodriguez said. "Their team won their section, too. It's what you expect from the top seed. They did everything well. We got a couple games. It wasn't a total blowout. The kids played hard. They had nothing to lose. That was their mentality."

Morales and Lazcano made program history in 2016 by qualifying for the section's doubles tournament.

Ruben and Manuel earned a return trip this year after taking second at the Western Athletic Conference finals again.

Central Valley had one of the top 16 doubles teams in Division II for the second year in a row.

"They had a solid year," Rodriguez said. "They played hard. They worked together. They complemented each other really well."
