Hughson High School's varsity baseball team edged visiting Ripon Christian 6-4 in non-conference play on Monday, March 14.

Senior pitcher Tyler Moreno allowed no hits and tallied 10 strikeouts in 42/3 innings for the Huskies, who moved to 3-3 on the year. He walked twice, stole two bases and scored a pair of runs on offense.

Hughson teammates Rudy Carrillo, Jose Lopez, Trent Damas, Ben Melendez and Erik Rosenquist also contributed.

Carrillo batted 2-for-3 from the plate with two doubles, two RBIs and one run.

Lopez collected one RBI and run.

Damas had an RBI.

Melendez and Rosenquist added one run each.

The Huskies battled back from a 4-2 deficit.

Hughson scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and one in the fourth to secure the victory.

Huskies 5, Hawks 4

Host Hughson rallied for a 5-4 victory over Central Valley on Tuesday, March 8.

The Huskies scored twice in the final inning of the non-conference contest.

Brian Bishop accounted for the winning run.

He raced home after Central Valley failed to turn a potential, game-ending double play. Garrett Williams' grounder was fielded by the Hawks' shortstop. CV's second baseman made an errant throw to first base.

Hughson responded after giving up three runs and squandering a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

Lopez pitched a complete game for the Huskies. He posted a 1.00 ERA, allowed four hits, yielded just one earned run and struck out three in seven innings.

Jose helped his own cause with a double, one RBI, one run and one stolen base.

Bishop (single, RBI and run), Williams (RBI), Damas (double), Moreno (single), Zack Villarreal (single and run) and Clayton Highfill (RBI and two runs) chipped in as well.

Hughson will begin Trans-Valley League play this week with a two-game series against Orestimba. The Huskies and Warriors will face off on March 22 and 24. The second game will be played at Hughson this Thursday at 4 p.m.

Hughson wins twice

Hughson High School's varsity softball team pulled away for an 8-3 win against visiting Sonora on Tuesday, March 15.

The Huskies outscored the Wildcats 6-1 after the first inning.

Hughson totaled 15 hits on offense during the non-conference game.

Katelyn Harden batted 2-for-4 with one double, two RBIs and one run for Hughson, which improved to 9-1 on the year.

Courtney Nawrocki finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs.

Kristen Meyer collected three hits and scored one run.

Mary Caton chipped in with a double, a single, an RBI and a run.

Hughson pitcher Shelby Ross tossed a complete game. She gave up one earned run and scattered seven hits with four strikeouts over seven innings.

Huskies 11, Redskins 0

Hughson defeated visiting Gustine by the mercy rule on Monday, March 14.

The Huskies scored seven times in the bottom of the third inning.

Caton led the way on offense with one single, four RBIs and one run.

Harden, Nawrocki, Meyer, Jessica Mendes and Payton Ross contributed one RBI apiece.
