Ladies water polo team win twice at Western tournament

The Ceres High girls water polo team compiled a 2-3 record at the 26th Annual Western High School Championships.

"They did an awesome job this weekend," said Ceres coach Lesley Willems. "They were aggressive and they were shooting more."

Ceres won one of three games at Beyer High School on Saturday.

The Bulldogs edged Oakmont 9-7. They lost 6-3 to Grace Davis and 10-4 to Liberty.

Lauren Griffin tallied a team-high six goals, Katie Griffith added two goals and Tristin Long scored once against Oakmont. Ceres goalie Amanda Arrollo made eight saves.

Arrollo blocked 15 shots, and Long, Griffith and Kelli Farrell all scored once during Ceres' loss to Davis of Modesto.

Farrell score twice, Griffith and Jennifer Melton scored once, and Arrollo had eight saves in goal during Ceres' loss to Liberty.

The Bulldogs won one of two games at Pitman High School on Friday.

They beat West 8-1 but lost 5-4 to Buhach Colony.

Modesto routs Ceres

The Bulldogs suffered their second consecutive loss on Thursday at Ceres High School.

Ceres allowed 10 goals in the second half in falling 16-1 in league play to Modesto High.

"The first two times we played them it wasn't that bad," said Ceres coach Lesley Willems. "We had an off day."

Sarah Willems scored once and Arrollo and Jayme Westbrook had eight and two saves, respectively, in goal for the Bulldogs, who fell to 4-7 in the Modesto Metro Conference.

Annie Benish, Katie Gallardo, A. Babcock and L. Lemos had five, four, three and two goals, respectively, for Panthers, who improved to 9-2 in the league standings.

Ceres trailed 6-0 at intermission, 11-1 at the end of the third quarter.

"We just couldn't put it in the cage," Lesley said.

Davis exacts revenge

The Bulldogs edged the Spartans 8-6 at Ceres High School on Sept. 23.

Davis exacted revenge against Ceres in Modesto on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

Brittany Jaime, Alyssa Fairbanks and Christine Coulter each had two goals, Alyssa Figueroa and Arielle Phillips both scored once and Sammie Woerman blocked seven shots for the Spartans, who posted an 8-5 victory over the Bulldogs.
