Lady Bulldogs place third at Mills tourney

The Ceres High varsity girls basketball team started its season by beating Pitman at home on Nov. 22. The Bulldogs downed Gunn and Terra Nova en route to placing third at the Mills High Tournament last week in Milbrae. Mills captured the team title. Sequoia took second.

Ceres compiled a 2-1 record. Jessica Mazza, Jennifer Arnold and Kristen McClure, the Bulldogs' top returning players, led the way.

Mazza and Arnold both made the all-tournament team for their overall play.

McClure was a force inside. The center totaled 39 points.

The Bulldogs beat Gunn 47-33 in the third-place game on Friday.

McClure scored a game-high 20 points. Arnold, Mazza, Erica Arellano and Jordan Nash had seven, six, five and four points apiece. Arnold made two 3-pointers.

Ceres built a 23-16 lead in the first half.

The Bulldogs outscored Gunn 24-17 after intermission.

Ceres lost 38-30 to Sequoia in the second round on Thursday.

Arnold, McClure, Brittany Lusk and Mazza scored eight, seven, six and five points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.

Margaret Pupunu led Sequoia with 11 points. Paulene Makasini and Alicia Ellis had 10 points apiece. Pupunu and Makasini each made two 3-pointers.

Ceres outscored Sequoia 24-23 during the final three quarters.

The Bulldog trailed 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Ceres edged Terra Nova 47-43 in the opening round on Wednesday.

Mazza scored a career-high 19 points. McClure, Arnold, Jamie Boling and Arellano added 12, seven, five and four points, respectively.- By DALE BUTLER /Staff reporter of the Ceres (Calif.) Courier
