Lady Bulldogs place third in Brentwood

The Ceres High varsity girls basketball team finished third at the Mills Tournament in Milbrae on Dec. 2. The Bulldogs had a repeat performance at the Liberty High School-Stonebarger Tournament in Brentwood last week. Foothill and Liberty placed first and second, respectively.

Ceres (5-2) won two of three games at the eight-team event. Point guard Jessica Mazza made the all-tournament team. She led the team in assists.

The Bulldogs outscored California High School of San Ramon 14-5 in the first quarter and cruised to a 60-44 victory in the third-place game on Saturday.

Three Ceres High players reached double figures in scoring. Kristen McClure had a game-high 23 points. Jennifer Arnold had 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Heather Jones had 10 points, including one 3-pointer.

Mazza added eight points and 12 assists for the Bulldogs, who shot 36 percent (4-for-11) from the free-throw line.

Ceres led 27-19 at intermission, including 14-5 at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs outscored the Grizzlies 33-25 in the second half.

Ceres lost 52-44 to Foothill of Pleasanton in the semifinals on Friday.

Arnold led the Bulldogs with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Jones, McClure and Mazza scored nine, eight and six points, respectively.

Christie Shreve led the Falcons with 12 points. Krystal Oji and Marikah Woodson had eight and seven points apiece.

Ceres shot 72 percent (13-for-18) from the free-throw line. Foothill shot 38 percent (6-for-16).

The Falcons outscored the Bulldogs 14-6 in the fourth quarter.

The score was tied at 38-all at the end of the third quarter.

Ceres defeated St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda 47-32 in the opening round.

McClure poured in 12 points. Mazza and Jones had eight points apiece. Arnold added six points.
