Lady Bulldogs win consolation championship

Ceres High's varsity girls basketball team roared back from a 12-point deficit to defeat Pioneer 55-43 for the consolation championship at the River City tournament on Saturday in West Sacramento.

Jode Johnson scored a season-high 21 points for the Bulldogs, who improved to 3-4 on the year. Sophomore Stephanie Yankovich had a career-high 19 points. All-tourney pick Jamie Beck added four points.

Amy Raymond (four points), freshman Bethany Mazza (three points), sophomore Lili Jaimes (two points) and Aimee Guzenhauser (two points) chipped in as well.

Ceres High shot 80 percent (20-for-25) from the free-throw line.

The Bulldogs outscored the Patriots 21-12 in the second and 17-7 in the fourth quarters.

Ceres High will be hosting the Larry Hersey Basketball Tournament this week at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium. Hersey, a longtime supporter and Ceres Lions Club member, passed away in August of 2007.

The Bulldogs will play against Atwater on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Hughson (Friday/7 p.m.) and Bret Harte (Saturday/2:30 p.m.).
