New-look Bulldogs drop pair of games

Ceres High School's new-look varsity boys basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with back-to-back losses.

The defending Western Athletic Conference champion Bulldogs, competing with a lineup consisting of four new starters, lost 64-27 to Chavez on Nov. 26 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.

James Rice, a standout receiver and cornerback in football, scored a team-high 12 points for Ceres High (1-0).

Bulldog returnees Binder Atwal and Jimbo Pernetti added eight and five points, respectively.

First-year varsity player Michael Ghimenti had two points.

Ceres High trailed 40-10 at halftime. The Bulldogs were outscored 23-4 in the first quarter.

Ceres High was edged out by Enochs 54-49 during a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Foundation Game on Monday, Nov. 28 in Modesto.

Atwal made three treys on his way to pouring in a team-high 18 points.

Rice tallied 17 points.

Pernetti and Jose Nava collected five and four points, respectively.

Ghimenti and Harman Chung both contributed two points.

Abel Reyes had one point.

The Bulldogs battled back from a 22-4 first-quarter deficit.

The Ceres High-Enochs contest does not count towards team standings. Foundation games raise money for the section's scholarship program and Women in Sports Conference.
