The Ceres Sizzle 16-and-under travel softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Survivor Tournament earlier this month at Rainbow Fields.

Ceres tied for fifth place with three other teams. The Sizzle compiled a 1-3 record.

"We had a good summer," head coach Mike Corsaut said. "Everyone got better. That's the exciting part."

Livermore ended Ceres' season. The Sizzle squandered a one-run lead while losing 3-2 to the Mojo on Aug. 7.

Ceres allowed two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning.

"You can't give any team extra outs," Corsaut said.

Yasmine Garcia accounted for both of Ceres' runs.

Sizzle pitcher Monica Gonzalez allowed five hits and tallied four strikeouts.

Ceres opened the tournament on Aug. 6 with back-to-back losses.

The Sizzle lost 5-4 to the Mojo and 12-0 to the East Bay Vipors (Walnut Creek).

Livermore overcame a 4-1 deficit.

Ceres won its final game on Aug. 6. Tessa Corsaut fanned six batters and walked none as the Sizzle posted a 4-1 victory over the Los Banos Tigers.

Central Valley's Malynda Lomeli, Ceres High's Tessa Corsaut, Izzy Saldana, Breanna DeLeon, Darian Sawyer and Jayme Langan, Waterford's Yasmine Garcia and Brentnie Flippo, Modesto High's Monica Gonzalez, Enochs' Madeline Kelley and Rachael Klier, and Escalon's Samantha Shipley and Madysen Costa helped lead the Sizzle to a 19-14 overall record this summer.

"We didn't win many games at the beginning of the year," coach Corsaut said. "The girls got better because they worked hard. They competed. They were fun to coach."
