The Ceres Sizzle 10-and-under travel softball team finished second overall at the Memorial Day Classic All-Star Tournament.

“We’re happy we made it to the championship game,” head coach Nikole Ferrel said. “That’s always the goal.”

The Sizzle amassed a 4-1-1 record in Sacramento and improved to 10-4-1 on the season.

“We’ve been struggling with our bats,” Ferrel said. “We wanted to see the girls hit. They were definitely productive until the last game. Defensively, we played really well. We turned some double plays.”

The Sizzle won two of three games on May 26.

Top-seeded Ceres lost 8-2 to Woodland Xtreme in the finals on May 26.

Bella Bravo and Reylena Herrera both homered for the Sizzle.

“We got shut out until the final inning,” Ferrel said. “They had a really good pitcher.”

Ceres defeated Firecrackers-Nulick 3-1 in the semifinals.

The Sizzle topped the Susanville Sluggers 8-3 in the quarterfinals.

Ceres collected two wins, no losses and one tie in seeding play on May 25.

The Sizzle bested Xtreme (8-4) and Tahoe-Tallac (11-6).

The Sizzle and Firecrackers battled to a tie (1-1).

Ceres has placed in two of three tournaments.

The Sizzle also took second in Elk Grove.

Ceres’ roster consists of 11 players: Bravo, Herrera, Amaia Ferrel, Makaela Brown, AJ Wright, Jolissa Guillory, Gaby Ortiz, Cyanna Costello, Kaliyah Castillo, Sami Alcaraz and Olivia Costa.

“This is our first time playing year-round,” coach Ferrel said. “We’ve been practicing since January. We’ve done well. But with this group, we can do much better. They genuinely love the game. Even on their off days, they’re putting in work.”
