Thornberry places first in Chico

Ceres High grad Ryan Thornberry claimed individual medalist honors at the Chico State Wells Fargo Invitational last week at Butte Creek Country Club. He finished four strokes ahead of UCLA's Craig Leslie with a 6-under-par 210 en route to leading the Cal State Stanislaus men's golf team to a third-place finish in a field of 11. The Warriors carded an 8-over-par 872. The Bruins and Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners placed first (866) and second (872), respectively.

Thornberry had a one-shot lead after the first two rounds, which were completed on Oct. 10. On Oct. 11, he shot a 1-under 71 in the third and final round to capture the title at the 54-hole tournament.

Thornberry and the Warriors opened the 2005-06 season last month. He tied for first at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Oct. 4. Thornberry finished sixth at the Western Washington University Invitational on Sept. 27. Cal State Stanislaus will complete its fall season at Hawaii-Hilo, Oct. 31-Nov. 1. - Staff reports
