Trio help JV girls extend win streak

With Erica Arellano, Jamie Boling and Cassie Rayford leading the way, the Ceres High JV girls basketball team beat Modesto High 45-29 Thursday evening in Ceres.

Arellano, Boling and Rayford scored a combined 36 points. Arellano tallied 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and six assists. Boling had 10 points and eight rebounds. Rayford added nine points and 13 rebounds.

"This is our third time beating them," said Ceres coach Kassi Baker.

Ceres improved to 11-0 in the Modesto Metro Conference, 16-1 overall. The Bulldogs have won 13 straight.

"This is the best team I have ever had," Baker said. "All 11 girls have a chance to play varsity next year."

Rayford and Arellano accounted for all 11 of Ceres' first-quarter points. Rayford scored the Bulldogs' first eight points. Arellano added three points.

Ahead 11-10, Ceres extended its lead to 11 by halftime. The Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 15-5 in the second quarter. Arellano and Boling scored five and four points, respectively.

Ceres scored 19 points in the second half, five more than Modesto. Arellano had nine points, including seven in the third quarter. Boling had six points, including four in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs shot 61 percent (11-for-18) from the free-throw line for the game.

The Panthers shot 17 percent (1-for-6) from the foul line.

Dawgs edge Spartans

Ceres made its free throws. Davis didn't.

That proved to be the difference.

The Bulldogs buried 15 of 27 free throws en route to a 39-31 victory over the Spartans in Ceres on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Davis missed 20 of 27 from the charity stripe.

Six Bulldogs scored, including two in double figures.
