Mike Tubera was a member of the Blaker-Kinser Jr. High wrestling team last season.

On Saturday, he made his debut at the high-school level. Competing in a varsity tournament for the first-time ever, the Ceres High freshman didn't disappoint.

Tubera finished sixth in the 112-pound weight class with a 2-3 record at the 29th Annual James Riddle Memorial Classic, a 25-team tournament, held at Oakdale High School.

Oakdale's Sean Gall defeated Tubera for fifth place.

Tubera's two victories came against Sonora's Gabe Prieto and Golden Valley's Ivory Marshall.

"Mike was the only guy who ended up getting a medal," said Ceres coach Steve Vieira. "He wrestled tough."

Ceres' Louis Bracamonte, Steven Chaves, Russell Bridges and Nathan Niemeyer all tied for seventh in their respective weight classes.

Bracamonte compiled a 1-2 record in the 119-pound weight class. The freshman beat Davis' Mohsen Ghanizadeh but lost to Riverbank's Martin Moreno and Valley's Ben Turner.

Chavez went 1-2 in the 152-pound weight class. The freshman beat Golden Valley's Ping Yang but lost to Waterford's Curtis Van Laar and Sheldon's Nathan Gregoire.

Bridges went 1-2 in the 215-pound weight class. The junior beat Andrew Hill's Jorge Gallegos but lost to Valley's Brian Jacobson and Sheldon's Joe Carera.

Niemeyer went 0-2 in the heavyweight class. The sophomore lost to Valley's Eric Smith and Grace Davis' Leo Daddario.

Ceres' Zach Van Wagoner, Mike Gonsalez, Tony Chaves and Hector Reyes also competed at the tournament.

Van Wagoner went 1-2 in the 160-pound weight class. The sophomore beat Amador's Aaron Diggins but lost to Merrill West's John Melville and Mariposa's Jeremy Scott.

Melville and Scott overpowered Van Wagoner.

"He ran up against some guys that looked like horses," Vieira said. "I think he's going to end up going down to 152s."

Gonsalez went 0-2 in the 125-pound weight class. The freshman lost to Merrill West's Bobby Cleary and Carson's Kyle Banko.

Chaves went 0-2 in the 130-pound weight class. The freshman beat Mariposa's Vince Guzzetta but lost to Buhach Colony's Jewel Jackson and Carson's Kelly Manning.

Reyes went 0-2 in the 189-pound weight class. The senior lost to Amador Valley's Alex Boyovich and Linden's Ron Cook.

The Bulldogs finished 21st in the team standings with 24.5 points. Golden Valley (226.5), Carson (191) and Buhach Colony (183) placed first, second and third, respectively. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff Reporter of The Ceres (Calif.) Courier
