Varsity boys swim team improves to 2-0

Trailing 79-75, the Ceres High varsity boys swimming team needed to place first and third in the 400-free relay event to defeat Pitman in Turlock on Friday.

Jason Weststeyn, Mike Polovin, Joey Rossi, Eric Scudder, Ryan Calou, Max Ottersbach, Cody Frampton and Vince Wester delivered.

Weststeyn, Polovin, Rossi and Scudder won the race in 3:44.97, and Calou, Ottersbach, Frampton and Wester took second in 4:03.37 as the Bulldogs edged the Pride 91-90 in a non-league dual meet.

"That was some pretty tough competition," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia. "We won by one point."

The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 overall.

"It was a good team effort within the individual races and relays," Garcia said. "A lot of the kids brought in points coming in second, third, fourth and fifth."

Ceres' first league meet will be held at Ceres High School on March 18. The Bulldogs will compete against the Modesto High Panthers.

"We look strong but we got to continue to build from this point," Garcia said. "We're going to be facing some tough teams in league."

The Bulldogs placed first in nine of 12 events against the Pride. They also had two second, five third, six fourth and three fifth-place finishers.

The top four placers in individual races earned points, including six for first, four for second, three for third, two for fourth and one for fifth.

The top three placers in relay events were also rewarded, including eight points for first, four for second and two for third.

Ceres had several double winners in individual events, including Rossi and Scudder. Rossi placed first in the 200 free in 1:58.78 and 500 free in 5:22.67. Scudder placed first in the 100 free in 54.11 seconds and 100 back in 1:02.79.

Weststeyn placed first in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.89 and second in the 100 fly in 1:09.32.

Richter placed first in the 100 breast in 1:14.11 and fourth in the 200 IM in 2:32.79.

Mike Polovin placed third in the 50 free in 26.22 seconds and 100 back in 1:12.24.

Wester placed second in the 100 back in 1:09.01 and fourth in the 100 fly in 1:12.67.

Winchester placed third in the 100 breast in 1:18.43. Ottersbach placed fourth in the 50 free in 27.31 seconds. Ricky Heatherly placed fourth in the 500 free in 7:16.24. George Polovin placed fourth in the 100 breast in 1:27.35.

Frampton placed fifth in the 200 free in 2:21.60 and 100 free in 1:04.19.

The 200-medley relay team of Scudder, Richter, Weststeyn and Rossi placed first in 1:50.86.

The 200-free relay team of Calou, Ottersbach, Frampton and Wester placed third in 1:51.10.

James Carswell won the diving event for the Bulldogs.

Varsity girls lose

Pitman defeated the Ceres High varsity girls swimming team 111-76 on Friday in Turlock.

The Bulldogs (1-1) lost thanks in large part to a lack of depth.

"Unfortunately, Pitman was a little bit deeper so they were able to earn more points," Garcia said. "They have 44 athletes."

Ceres posted three first, five second, six third, six fourth and five fifth-place finishes.

Katie Griffith, Bailey MacArthur, Jaymie Lenz, Sarah Willems, Kamie Machado, Rachel Holder, Lauren Griffin, Tristin Long, Amanda Arrollo, Sarah Pullum, Christina Currie and Jessica Johnson all earned points for the Bulldogs.

Griffith took first in the 200 free in 2:07.64 and 100 fly in 1:08.59.

MacArthur took first in the diving competition.

Lenz took second in the 100 breast in 1:16.84, and third in the 200 individual medley in 2:49.06 and 100 fly in 1:09.59.

Willems took second in the 100 breast in 1:38.44 and fifth in the 200 free in 2:47.00.

Machado took second in the 100 back in 1:15.72.

Holder took third in the 50 free in 27.80 seconds and 100 free in 1:02.95.

Griffin took third in the 100 back in 1:17.54 and fifth in the 100 free in 1:06.81.

Long took third in the 500 free in 6:26.02 and fifth in the 100 back in 1:21.25.

Arrollo took fourth in the 50 free in 28.32 seconds and 100 free in 1:05.74.

Pullum took fourth in the 200 IM in 2:51.47.

Currie took fifth in the 50 free in 30.83 seconds.

Johnson took fifth in the 500 free in 7:20.94.

The 200-medley relay team of Griffin, Griffith, Lenz and Holder placed second in 2:05.48.

The 200-free relay team of Lenz, Machado, Pullum and Arrollo placed second in 1:57.86.
