Assault occurs in back of patrol car

Police officers had to physically restrain one intoxicated man from assaulting a second intoxicated man in the back of a patrol car on their ride to the county jail.

The men were arrested during a call about suspicious people in the parking lot of the Microtel Inn & Suites at the corner of Herndon Avenue and Evans Road at 3:28 a.m. on Friday. Officer Ross Bays investigated and found Edwin Hopkins, 27, and Marco Pacheco, 50, both of Modesto, were intoxicated. He arrested them for public intoxication. But when Bays got to the jail, Hopkins began kicking Pacheco, pinning his head to the metal bars in the back of the car and kicking him several times. Hopkins resisted commands to stop and another officer was required to get Hopkins under control. Officers had to take Hopkins to the ground. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and public intoxication., Pacheco was arrested for public intoxication.
